A large, sparrow sized nuthatch

Dark grey or black cap and nape
White face and underparts
Blue grey upperparts
Rusty undertail couverts
Long grey straight or slightly upturned bill
Short tail
Black outer tail feathers
Eyes black
Feet grey

Frequently seen hpopping headfirst down a tree in search of insects
Jams nuts into a crack in treee bark, then hammers or "hatches" them open with it's bill

Joins flocks of Chickadees in winter

Cavity lined with shredded bark, fur and fine grass

5 - 9 creamy white eggs speckled with reddish brown, incubation 13 - 14 days, fledge 14 days

Insects, nuts and seeds

Voice
Song - soft, nasal "what-what-what", Call - a soft "yank"
