Peregrine Falcon (Falco perigrinus)

Large robust falcon, medium sized hawk

Almost exterminated by pesticides in the mid 20th century, restoration efforts have allowed the rebuilding of this species.
Powerful and fast flying (up to 69 mph in direct flight and up to 200 mph in a steep dive.

Black moustache
Short sharp hooked beak
Dark brown eyes
Blackish, dark grey hooded head
White cheek area
Long pointed wings
Bluish grey back and wings
Heavily barred sides, belly and leggings
White underparts with some black spotting and barring
Barred grey and black tail and underwings
Large yellow feet and legs
Yellow cere

Length 14 - 19 inches, wingspan 39 - 43 inches

Weight
530 - 1600 grams, 18.5 - 56.5 ounces

Habitat
Cliffs, open country, along rivers, lakes and coasts (or large buildings in cities) for nesting, open areas for hunting

Nest
Shallow and unlined, placed on ledge of cliff or building

Eggs
2 - 5 cream to reddish brown eggs, incubation 29 - 32 days, fledge 35 - 42 days

Food
Mainly birds - songbirds to small shore birds, bats and other small mamals

Voice
Series of harsh "kak, kak, kak"
