Large black and iridescent bird with large stout bill, males and females same
Dark brown eyes
Black legs
Black feathers tinged with violet
Squared off fan shaped tail
Very intelligent
Monogamous
Very gregarious, forms tight family relationships
Can roosts in very large numbers of many hundreds and even thousands
Young birds can stay with parents for a number of years and form large family groups
Has a home territory but also searched for food with an extended flock, searches the ground for food
Populations increasing
Very widespread
Acts as a sentinel for other wildlife
Can be a nuisance in urban areas
Susceptible to West Nile virus

Habitat
Trees for roosting and nesting, and space for ground feeding. Common in urban and agricultural areas

Nest
Usually high in trees, very visible, large cup of sticks with mud and grass, lined with feathers, hair, bark and soft materials

Eggs
Dull green with brown markings, 2 - 6 eggs, incubation 17 - 19 days, fledges 4 -5 weeks

Food
Grains, seeds, fruit, garbage, insects, carrion, "road kill", mice, birds eggs, nestlings

Voice

Hoarse voice, caw-caw or caa-caa



Characteristics
Feeder or backyard foods: Peanuts, Bread
