Large black and iridescent bird with large stout bill, males and females same Dark brown eyes Black legs Black feathers tinged with violet Squared off fan shaped tail Very intelligent Monogamous Very gregarious, forms tight family relationships Can roosts in very large numbers of many hundreds and even thousands Young birds can stay with parents for a number of years and form large family groups Has a home territory but also searched for food with an extended flock, searches the ground for food Populations increasing Very widespread Acts as a sentinel for other wildlife Can be a nuisance in urban areas Susceptible to West Nile virus
