Bold, blue, noisy and brash, not the most loved bird but unmistakable. Abundant in the east and spreading to the west. Thrives on backyard food and feeders where it can dominate the local song bird population

A common and familiar bird in gardens and parks from the Atlantic coast to the Great Plains. From the Rockies to the West Coast the Blue "Stellers" Jay takes over, cyanocitta stelleri.

Crested, bright blue upper parts, pale grey underparts, black necklace, white patches on wings.

Length 10 - 11 inches, wingspan 15 - 17 inches

Weight
85g (3 ounces)

Habitat
Mainly oak forests and now urban and suburban parks and residential gardens, especially where oak trees are present

Nest
Grass and twigs shaped in a cup and lined with grass

Eggs
3 - 7 greenish to bluish marked with browns, incubation 16 -18 days, fledge in 17 - 21 days

Food
Insects, accorns, nuts, feeder seeds

Voice
Shrill harsh screams, sometimes musical, clear whistles mimics other birds especially raptors

Characteristics
Feeder foods: Sunflower Seed, Cracked Corn, Suet
