It is unclear why many people fear bats as they are actually harmless creatures that play a vital role in natures balance, they are the primary predators of night flying insects and are essential in controlling insect populations. There are over 40 species of bat in the USA and Canada but some species are declining at an alarming rate. This is due mainly to loss of habitat due to the development of their natural roosting sites.
